You are on holiday with us in the mountains to enjoy the freshness of summer, and you’re right! Far from the crowded beaches, you can wander around in peace. During one of your escapades to the top of the Pierre Avoi above Verbier, you can see Martigny at the foot of the Château de la Bâtiaz. It’s a pretty little town nestled among vineyards and orchards, a place to visit for a stroll, for an aperitif, and especially for a trip to the market on Thursday morning to fill your basket with local produce, and to taste some of the more exotic specialties.

A visit to the Thursday market is the ideal way to meet producers, and to get advice on seasonal, local, and quality products. Plan this outing early in your vacation, and you won’t regret it. No need to go to the South, drive a little more than half an hour from Verbier and let yourself be inspired by this town with a southern climate.

More than a market, Thursday morning in Martigny is a time for reunion, sharing and conviviality. Stroll by the small stands with their colourful stalls full of fruits and vegetables from the region: this town is where the specialised cultivation of asparagus and tomato began, and also the Williams pear or the apricot, which are at the base of the famous Morand eaux-de-vie. Here you will also find various savoury specialties (see our article on “valais dried meats”), and cheeses from the surrounding alpine pastures, as well as an endless choice of Italian or exotic products that will enhance your week-end recipes.

Here there is no question of getting bothered by pushy stall vendors. On the contrary, it’s you who will approach them, so that they can give you the best advice on your preferences. Stroll through this happy and peaceful atmosphere, and end your pilgrimage on one of the terraces of the central square, in the shade of the plane trees. There is no better place to pass the time than under these trees, some dating back over 150 years.

A small tip, don’t leave from your holiday home too late in the day, as it can be crowded on some Thursdays. That way you will have more choice, and you will be able to enjoy the morning freshness. The market ends around noon. Some vendors offer set menus from different countries of the world (Asia, Middle East, Africa, etc.)

In Verbier,  you can also discover summer market with handmade arts and crafts on sunday the 21th , 28th of july, and the 4th, 11th of august.
