See life through rose-tinted glasses with Valais strawberries

The Valais canton in the heart of the Alps is an exceptional land. The climate in general is dry and sunny, ideal for growing this beautiful red fruit.

The Valais people have produced strawberries for over a century. Harvesting the staggered crop runs from late May to early July, but may be extended until October. This fruit can be grown in high altitudes. The strawberry is a demanding species to cultivate: it is mainly cultivated by specialists. The “Valais strawberry” brand ensures compliance with a minimum size and sugar content, and social and environmental standards.

The strawberry is a false fruit. Surprise! The strawberry is not really the fruit of the strawberry plant. Well, almost: the real fruits are achenes or small alveoli containing the seeds. The red and fleshy part is actually the receptacle of these alkenes. Therefore, the strawberry is a false fruit. Low in calories, strawberries are well stocked with vitamin C, but also rich in minerals, beta carotene and polyphenols.

Strawberries, red with pleasure !

Strawberries can be eaten limitlessly and with pleasure! There are more than 600 varieties. The best known are the Gariguette, a recent elongated and beautifully bright red variety, the Clery, the Arosa, the Ciflorette, the Pajaro, South West specialty, the Cigaline, the Darselect, the delicate Mara des Bois…

In Valais, you can buy directly from the producer. It is also possible to go pick them yourself in self-picking farms. www.philfruits.ch If you are looking for a fun activity to do with children, go and enjoy!

Strawberries are chosen by their perfume. The color should be bright and uniform with good green stalk. The strawberry is fleshy, juicy and fragrant. From appetizers to dessert, drinks or cocktails, the strawberry can be eaten at any time. Strawberries love desserts and are often included in many recipes: strawberry pie, strawberry charlotte, strawberry crumble, strawberry cream cake, strawberry tiramisu, strawberry salad, ice cream, jams and so many others! We get addicted to strawberries and we find it hard to let go.

But the strawberry can also slip in where it is least expected, in sweet and savory versions that will surprise you.

So cook it, cut it, sweeten it, feel it, handle it but mostly eat it, in all its forms, the Valais strawberry will make your recipes sparkle!
