Today we present an idea for a walk from Verbier. It’s a pretty, appealing walk with a varied landscape. It isn’t very difficult and has the added bonus of a breathtaking view from the top.
La Pierre Avoi is the summit that can be seen from the plain, with its very special toe shape, and which overlooks the resort of Verbier. It dominates the Rhône valley and its location is ideal for admiring the sun as it dips at the end of the day, and even for lingering there until sunset if coming back at night doesn’t scare you.
A very nice route
There are several options for getting there. There are fairly long options from the plain, from either Saxon or Vollèges, or lighter versions from Verbier via the Croix de Coeur, the Marlène, or the one following the ridge via La Chapelle Saint-Christophe. We propose the latter, which is very beautiful and aesthetic.
You will leave from the Verbier roundabout under the sports centre (Crêta Cô) and go up towards Patier and the Saint-Christophe chapel, where the view is worth a photo. Continue on the path to the Château de Verbier and then the Bisse waterfalls where you will see the “Levron chasm”. From this point of interest, keep going up into this forest, which will reveal its treasures to you.
Forest, ridge and summit
If you pay attention, you might come across hinds, deer, squirrels and even hear woodpeckers drumming on old tree trunks. On leaving this enchanting place, your path will take you to the top. On the ridge, be sure to take a peek on the north side, where it is quite common to encounter chamois. For the last few metres you will have to climb very steep stairs, which may be offputting for people prone to vertigo.
A breathtaking view
The summit of Pierre Avoi will give you the impression of being in the centre of the world. The view is simply stunning. You will discover the Valais peaks, such as the Dents du Midi, the Chavalard, the Grand and Petit Muvran, the Mont Blanc massif as well as that of the Trient, the Bietschhorn at the bottom of the Valais and many others…
For the descent, in order to make a loop, you can reach Verbier via the Marlène mountain pasture.
So you know, Pierre Avoi comes from the patois “Avoué” which means acute, pointed. It is therefore the mountain with the acute point.
